Cauvery row death: ₹10 lakh compensation to victim’s family

Synopsis

Yesterday night, residents of Hegganahalli had damaged a Hoysala van on Monday, which led a police firing. Umesh Gowda was killed in the shooting, and two others were severely injured.

Circumstances at Hegganahalli, where one person was killed in police firing last night, remain tense. Police had to resort to firing tear gas shells to bring the situation under control today. 

 

Meanwhile, the government has announced a monetary compensation to the victim’s family.

 

Despite the curfew, residents of Hegganahalli in Magadi Road intensified their stir on Tuesday. Protesters were pelting stones on the police, and the situation came under control only after police resorted to tear gas shelling under the leadership of DCP Harsha.

Umesh was working at a petrol bunk in JP Nagar. On Monday, he was returning home to Hegganahalli where protesters were pelting stones at a police vehicle. To disperse the crowd, police resorted to firing, which struck Umesh in the chest.

 

He was admitted to a private hospital, but failed to respond to the treatment and died.   

 

Umesh hailed from a poor economic background. He had been married for four years and is survived by a wife who is seven months pregnant and a daughter.

 

Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday announced ₹10 lakh compensation to the family of the victim.

 

The Home Minister’s decision was announced by deputy commissioner V Shankar. The government also has promised to take care of his children’s education. Also, Umesh’s wife will be provided with contract-based employment. 

 

JD(S) leader Zameer Ahmed has also assured ₹5 lakh compensation.
