Bridging Gulf states: New causeway to connect Saudi, Bahrain

Giving a fresh lease of life to an earlier proposal to build a new bridge connecting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, the rulers of the two Gulf countries have come to an agreement on a new causeway named after King Hamad.
The new link is proposed alongside the King Fahd Causeway. Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, who is visiting the neighbouring country, and Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa agreed to expedite the proposed causeway project.
Though the causeway was first proposed in 2014, it did not take off. The visit of the Saudi King gave a fresh lease of life to the project. The bridge will be named after King Hamad.
An average 75,000 people is estimated to cross the King Fahd Causeway, the only bridge connecting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, every day. The bridge was built and opened in 1986.
