By the end of this month, 1,000 more borewells will be taken up for recharging. "This activity has been taken up under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). It has not only provide employment to villagers but also help in bringing back dead borewells to life," Kolar Deputy Commissioner K.V.Thrilok Chandra said.
The deputy commissioner said the project was initiated a year back. The good rains the district received during the end of November and December last year has helped improve the groundwater levels, he said.
As the district is dependent on agriculture, the next step will be to dig 30,000 borewells in private lands. "In each taluk, 1,000 borewells will be put in the first phase. The work will start in a month and in the next ten months the work will be completed," said Chandra.
