Highlights
  • The BBMP launched a demolition drive from August 5.
  • Close to 130 illegal constructions were demolished.
  • The BBMP had marked around 1,000 buildings, as per the map of the stormwater drain.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been demolishing properties which have flouted laws and encroached into public land.

However, the general public isn't very happy about BBMP's demolition drive. Many middle-class families in Bengaluru lost their homes because of BBMP's sudden decision to knock down properties.

The families who are now homeless questioned the authorities regarding the drive which caught them off guard.

How did the BBMP suddenly decide that the constructions were illegal, considering that the BBMP itself had built its office on the very same encroached land? Why was no objection raised or survey conducted when the families paid property tax to the BBMP?

Documents which were decades old suddenly held no value. How can the BBMP demolish properties when all the documents including tax payment receipts were authentic? On whose orders did the BBMP change the route maps of the stormwater drains which fell under the properties of the rich and the influential?

The BBMP officers have been focusing on Kannada film actor Darshan’s house at Ideal Homes Layout in RR Nagar. As per the controversy enveloping Darshan's house, the land on which the house has been constructed, was originally a stormwater drain. Also, 30% of his house has been built on land acquired illegally.

However, officials have assured that as soon as they receive a confirmation of the survey documents, they'll arrive at a decision. The BBMP and the tax department will work together to conduct the survey and submit a report to the BBMP commissioner.

Unable to justify its actions, the BBMP has discontinued its demolition work temporarily. Currently, the city's governing body has kept itself busy clearing the debris in certain areas of RR Nagar.

The demolition will be on hold until a decision has been made by the commissioner.
