A 25-year-old man Varun was murdered in broad daylight on the busy streets of Arasikere Taluk on May 29, which has led to an unrest in the taluk.
It was alleged that Varun, who belonged to the Christian community, had a minor clash with some men belonging to another community.
On May 29, a group of 10 members attacked Varun near Ambedkar circle. He was severely injured and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
After this incident, KM Shivalinge Gowda had a press meet and claiming it to be a failure of law and order. He alleged that the police are deputed to his constituency through some political influences and they do not obey local leaders and MLAs. This has damaged their credibility and affected people’s trust in their political leaders.
The police have taken action and arrested a few people. As the investigation continued, they started arresting more men for interrogation which has lead to a chaos in the city. The family members and supporters of those who were arrested staged protests in front of taluk office.
Most of the supporters were BJP workers and members of Narendra Modi Youth Army Organization. Chinnappa Raju, state president, Narendra Modi Youth Army Organization gave a written appeal to the Grade 2 Tahasildar Phalaksha Murthy requesting the release of falsely accused.
They alleged that the police, in order to cover their failure in the investigation, are arresting randomly arresting people.
Varun’s parents Pushpa and Patrick have also held a press meet on June 6. In the press meet, they said, "Some people are offering us money to withdraw the case. We have lost our only son. We need justice not money or any compensation."
Parents of those arrested met Yeddyurappa to address their grievances. Taking an action, Yeddyurappa requested police officer Rahul Kumar to not arrest anyone.
“You have already arrested close to 15 Hindu boys and torturing many, in the name of interrogation. It is unfair. This kind of investigation will disturb the peaceful situation in Arasikere Taluk,” said Yeddyurappa in a telephonic conversation with the police.
