Synopsis

The retail giant will begin rolling out contactless payments at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on August 24, with a nationwide rollout planned by year-end.

  • Google Pay will be available at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting next week.
  • Apple Pay will also reportedly be among the contactless payment options.
  • WMT retail sentiment on Stocktwits was ‘extremely bullish,’ while message volume remained ‘extremely high.’

Walmart (WMT) is set to expand its contactless payment options, with Alphabet Inc.’s (GOOG, GOOGL) Google Pay and, according to reports, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) Apple Pay expected to be among the options available to shoppers. The retailer will begin introducing tap-to-pay capabilities at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on August 24, before expanding the service to all U.S. stores by the end of 2026 and gas stations by mid-2027.

At the time of writing on Friday afternoon, WMT stock was trading 0.60% lower.

WMT Expands Tap-To-Pay Options

Contactless payments allow shoppers to make purchases by tapping a card or phone to an electronic terminal, enabling faster checkout times.

Walmart said in a press release, “We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them.”

Tap to Pay will add to existing payment methods, including cash, credit cards and Walmart Pay. Through Walmart Pay, customers can use the retailer’s app to make payments, view purchases and receipts, and access Walmart+ fuel savings.

At Sam’s Club, members can also use Scan & Go to scan and pay for items while shopping, skipping the traditional checkout line.

Google Pay Confirmed, Apple Pay Reportedly Included

Alphabet Inc. said in a separate release that tap-to-pay using Google Pay is coming to Walmart. “Starting next week, shoppers can tap to pay using Google Pay for a quicker and more secure buying experience at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations in the U.S.,” the company said.

The contactless payment options would also include Apple Pay, according to a Bloomberg report. Walmart has been a notable holdout in offering Apple Pay, Bloomberg said, causing some grumbling among shoppers even as the payment service has become ubiquitous across the retail landscape.

Previously, the only contactless payment option at Walmart was its proprietary Walmart Pay system, operated through the retailer’s app, Bloomberg reported.

WMT Stock: Stocktwits Retail Sentiment

On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for WMT was ‘extremely bullish,’ unchanged in the past 24 hours, while message volume remained ‘extremely high’ during the same period.
