Synopsis

Rockstar highlighted GTA 6’s humor, modern culture, and a more realistic world, while Netflix’s preview attracted 31.1 million views.

  • Rockstar North co-lead Rob Nelson said GTA 6’s long development has made the studio careful about choosing trends that will remain relevant.
  • Rockstar focuses on lasting social behaviors and absurdities that fit the game’s story and setting, rather than trends that could quickly become outdated.
  • Netflix said the Grand Theft Auto VI preview attracted 31.1 million views, becoming its most-watched English-language film.

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (TTWO) stock gained premarket as investors weighed fresh details on Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. The lengthy development cycle has pushed Rockstar to focus on lasting social trends, smarter non-player character (NPC) behavior and a more reactive Vice City ahead of the game's Nov. 19 launch.

Take-Two Interactive stock inched 0.6% higher in Tuesday’s premarket.

Satire With Staying Power

Rockstar North co-lead Rob Nelson said the game's long development period has forced the team to think carefully about which real-world trends can remain relevant when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally reaches players.

According to a GamesRadar report, Nelson said the game has been under development since 2015, although most of the team moved onto the project after Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived in 2018. That lengthy production schedule created a problem for developers who wanted to reflect current events, since trends can disappear or evolve before a game reaches the public.

Rockstar continues to look for absurd behavior and social trends that can fuel the series' trademark humor. Nelson said the studio must judge whether an idea will remain meaningful long enough to survive writing, casting, filming, and implementation. The team ultimately chooses material that fits both the game's narrative and its fictional setting.

Modern Culture Shapes Vice City

Early footage suggests the new installment will draw heavily from contemporary culture. Social-media personalities chasing attention and viral moments appear throughout Vice City, while fictional television commercials continue Rockstar's tradition of poking fun at consumerism and corporate culture.

The game's effort to mirror modern life also extends to its characters. Residents will no longer ignore armed players as they often did in GTA 5, the report said. Nelson said the older system would feel out of place alongside the more detailed world and sophisticated character behavior Rockstar is building for the new title.

On Friday, Netflix (NFLX) said that “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” a preview of Grand Theft Auto VI, was the most-watched English-language film on the platform, with 31.1 million views. It also ranked No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks. The extended preview was available only on Netflix for six hours before being released on YouTube.
