Synopsis

Oracle and AstraZeneca plan to explore AI applications to improve clinical-trial recruitment, accelerate evidence generation and bring research insights into everyday care.

  • Oracle CEO Mike Sicilia said the collaboration could help accelerate research, connect more patients to clinical trials and bring relevant insights into care faster.
  • AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot highlighted the potential to identify patients sooner, optimize trials and generate evidence throughout a medicine's lifecycle.
  • The companies plan to establish shared governance, reusable technical components and agreed outcome measures to assess results and determine whether successful approaches could be extended across disease areas and geographies.

Oracle (ORCL) shares were in focus on Tuesday after the company announced an agreement with AstraZeneca (AZN) to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and real-world data could help clinicians identify eligible patients for clinical trials, improve trial efficiency and bring relevant research insights into everyday care.

“Some of the most important opportunities for AI are in healthcare, where better use of data can help turn scientific innovation into better outcomes for patients,” Oracle CEO Mike Sicilia said.

ORCL shares traded 0.51% higher in premarket trading, while AZN shares rose 1.76%, as of the time of writing on Tuesday.

What The Agreement Covers

The non-binding agreement is expected to combine AstraZeneca’s scientific and therapeutic expertise with Oracle’s health data, cloud, AI, analytics and clinical workflow capabilities.

The companies plan to explore selected use cases involving modern applications and AI to help care teams identify eligible patients earlier and more easily, with the aim of expanding access to clinical trials and addressing patient recruitment, which the companies describe as one of the largest obstacles in clinical trials.

Initial disease areas under consideration could include oncology; cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, respiratory and immunology, and rare diseases.

What Management Says

AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot said the collaboration could help clinicians identify patients sooner, optimize clinical trials and generate evidence continuously across the lifecycle of a medicine.

Anne-Claire Gerbaldi, AstraZeneca’s chief digital, data and AI officer, said the companies aim to connect learnings across science, clinical trials and everyday care to generate insights that strengthen research, accelerate innovation and enhance patient outcomes. She also cited the potential to support smarter clinical trials, strengthen safety monitoring and help patients receive diagnoses sooner.

Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, said Oracle would provide secure data, cloud, AI and clinical workflow capabilities. She said the collaboration could help health systems broaden access to clinical trials and generate evidence to support clinical decisions, under the governance of the health systems delivering care.

What Happens Next

Oracle and AstraZeneca intend to explore a continuous learning model in which insights from clinical research and routine care inform future study design, safety monitoring and patient care.

The companies also plan to establish shared governance, reusable technical components and agreed outcome measures to assess results and determine whether successful approaches could be extended across disease areas and geographies.
