5:01 pm:  Food Safety Department imposes fine of Rs 47 lakh for stale food solely in Ernakulam district

Kochi: The food safety department conducted strict inspections across the state after reports of deaths due to food poisoning. Throughout the period from January to December of the previous year, Ernakulam district witnessed intensive scrutiny under the direction of various squads within the Food Safety Department. This concerted effort resulted in the collection of fines amounting to ₹47,60,300 solely in Ernakulam district. The officials provided clarification regarding these developments during a meeting of the Food Safety Advisory Committee.

4:48 pm: Old man gets 10 years of imprisonment for sexually assaulting minor girl in Kannur

The Mattanur POCSO court granted 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 90,000 to the accused, who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl at a shop in Kannur. Abdul Khader, a native of Kannur was sentenced. 


4:14 pm: CRPF to be responsible for security of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan

Thiruvananthapuram: The CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) will be responsible for the security of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. The governor's vehicle will be escorted by CRPF personnel in front and behind. The police pilot vehicle and the local police vehicle will be in the fleet. At present, the commando unit of the Kerala Police is accompanying the Governor's vehicle. The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an order specifying the appointment of CRPF personnel to provide Z+ security. 


3:57 pm: Court grants bail to 12 SFI activists who protested against Governor Arif Mohammed Khan 

All 12 SFI activists who were arrested following their protest against Governor Arif Muhammad Khan at the Kollam ground have been granted bail. Bail was issued after a hearing at the Kottarakkara Judicial Magistrate. These activists were detained under IPC Section 124 for their involvement in the protest against the governor.
 


3:13 pm: Kerala police announces award for Ranjith Sreenivasan murder case investigation team

The state police chief praised the investigation team in BJP leader Ranjith Srinivasan's murder case. State police chief Dr Sheikh Darvesh Sahib expressed complete satisfaction with the court verdict in the Ranjith Srinivasan murder case. He especially praised all the officers of the police team who investigated the case. The state police chief also ordered to reward the members of the investigation team. The case was investigated by a team led by G Jayadev, former Alappuzha District Police Chief and currently Deputy Commissioner of VIP Security Section.


2:48 pm: Clash breaks out at Wadakkanchery Congress' office on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary

The conflict broke between Congress leaders during Mahatma Gandhi's martyrdom day in the Wadakkanchery Block Congress Committee office. The conflict erupted between block president Jayadeep and his supporters constituency president Biju Ismail and his followers. A portrait of Gandhiji and a chandelier were hurled, while chairs and window panes of the office were vandalized during the confrontation. The clash came when a section demanded that the Gandhi commemoration be held earlier.


2:15 pm: High court rejects bail plea of  Jolly Joseph in Koodathayi case

The High Court of Kerala rejected the bail plea of Jolly Joseph, the accuded in Koodathayi serial murder case today.Jolly is the main accused of allegedly killing six of her husband's family by using cyanide in food. Jolly was arrested for allegedly poisoning six members of her family to death over 14 years in Koodathayi village in Kozhikode district of Kerala. She was arrested with two of her partners, MS Mathew and P Prajikumar in 2019. 
 


1:45 pm: Student dies after being hit by KSRTC bus in Kollam

A student died after being hit by a KSRTC bus scooter near Kollam railway station. Gopika (18), a student of TKM Engineering College, died.


1:01 pm: Poopara gang rape case: All three accused sentenced to 90 years of imprisonment

The Devikulam fast-track court sentenced all three accused for 90 years of imprisonment in the gang rape of a 16-year-old Bengal native girl in Poopara, Idukki. The accused, Sugandh, a native of Tamil Nadu, Sivakumar, and Shyam, a native of Poopara, were transferred to jail.

12:33 pm: Old woman found dead inside her home in Thiruvananthapuram

An old woman met a tragic end after a cupboard fell on her head in Thiruvananthapuram. The Karamana police said that the dead body is 2 days old. The inquest proceedings are progressing. The locals were informed after the relatives did not answer their phone calls. 
 


11:28 am: Ranjith Sreenivasan murder case: All accused sentenced to death penalty

A Court in Kerala has handed down death sentences to 15 persons convicted for the murder of BJP leader and lawyer Ranjith Sreenivasan in December 2021. The Additional Sessions Court Mavelikara, in a judgment on January 20, found the 15 accused, allegedly associated with SDPI, guilty in the case.

More than half of the complaints have not been resolved even after a month of Nava Kerala Sadas in Thrissur district. Guruvayur has the highest number of grievances in the district. More than 20,000 complaints are yet to be resolved in 11 out of 13 constituencies.

8:18 am: Two people found dead after being hit by a train in Kasaragod

Two people were found dead after being hit by a train in Kasaragod. The bodies of two men were found near the tracks. The dead have not been identified. It was concluded that they were hit by a goods train at 5.20 a.m. The police have reached the spot and are completing the inquest process. The bodies will be shifted to the hospital.


8:07 am: Ranjith Sreenivasan murder case: Accused sentence to be pronounced today

The punishment for the accused in the murder case of Ranjith Sreenivasan will be pronounced today. The Mavelikkara Additional Sessions Court Judge, VG Sreedevi, will pass the sentence at 11 a.m. The court had earlier found all 15 accused who were tried in the case to be guilty. The prosecution has argued that this is a rare case and that the maximum punishment should be given.
