S Ashwathi, Chief Executive Officer of Davangere Zilla Panchayat was fed up of convincing people to build toilets. Whenever she approached the families, they would give excuses for not constructing the toilet. She thought, enough was enough. On Monday, she decided to do something different rather than receiving excuses. She took up a shovel and started clearing the ground - to make pit for toilets - putting the family to shame, reports Kannada Prabha.
A family living in the Theru Beedi, in the old part of the Devarahalli village in the district was putting off the construction of a toilet by giving excuses that they would start the work after the neighbours cleared the mud that had fallen into their court yard. On Monday, a team led by S Ashwathi had visited the village and again when the family gave the same excuse, Ashwathi picked up a shovel and started clearing the mud.
When the villagers saw a high-ranking official digging and clearing the mud, they were shocked and embarrassed. Even when the people requested her repeatedly, she did not stop. Ashwathi stopped only when the family members promised her that they would build a toilet within a day. She asked the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) to send her construction activities photos as and when it was completed.
