Ayurveda textbook suggests use of beef juice to cure intermittent fever Former Principal of Government Ayurveda College gives references from Caraka Samhita published by Chaukhambha Orientalia in 1981 Joint Director of Medical Education Ayush Department is not aware of such references in Ayurveda Textbook

When the whole nation is debating about the beef ban initiative by the Central Government, Former Principal of Karnataka Government Ayurveda College has given the references from Caraka Samhita textbook dealing with Ayurvedic medicines which say beef juice can be the solution for vishama jwara or intermittent fever.

Dr Srinivas, the Former Principal of Government Ayurveda College, said there are several compositions to deal with intermittent fever like typhoid, malaria, chikungunya and others, which may take a long time to heal and if not taken care, a person suffering from such illness may die. To deal with such fever in Caraka Samitha, animal meat is also suggested.

“In Caraka Samhita published by Chaukhambha Orientalia in 1981, translated by Professor Priyavrat Sharma, Former Director and Postgraduate Institute of Indian Medicine Banaras Hindu University, the Chapter II Caraka Sutrastaana, page number 17 points to 31st sloka, where it is clearly mentioned that the mixture prepared with ‘beef juice’ and soured with pomegranates alleviates intermittent fevers,”  said Dr Srinivas.

When Newsable contacted Dr Ahalya Sharma, Joint Director, Medical Education, Department of Ayush, she said she is not aware of such references and cannot comment as she is away from the class. But she agreed that Caraka Samhita is one of the books that is used to teach Ayush students.
