Highlights
  • Former DIG (prisons) Roopa's report on irregularities in the Central Prisons was a huge embarrassment to the Siddaramaiah government
  • To save its face, the government immediately shunted her out along with DGP Satyanarayana Rao who is facing allegations of bribery
  • At the cabinet meeting, the ministers reportedly spared no word to criticise her

While the whole nation is appreciating former DIG (prisons) D Roopa for exposing rampant irregularities in the Central prison at Parappana Agrahara that made headlines, three ministers in Siddaramaiah are reportedly upset over the officer.

DIG Roopa in her report had alleged that some of the jail inmates in the prisons were being given special treatment. She had specifically stated that jailed AIADMK leader Sasikala Natrajan and stamp paper accused Abdul Karim Telgi were enjoying "exclusive" facilities like a barrack for themselves with extra rooms and furniture. A special kitchen was also provided for Sasikala.

Roopa had alleged that both these convicts had allegedly bribed the jail officials to get their way out. Roopa in her report had alleged that then DGP prisons Satyanarayana Rao was allegedly bribed by Sasikala for the special treatment. Rao not only refuted these allegations but also had threatened to take legal action against Roopa. While Siddaramaiah immediately transferred Roopa and Rao to control the damage, he also initiated a probe into her allegations. Former bureuacrat Vinay Kumar is heading the probe.

As Roopa was unceremoniously shunted out, BJP quickly came to her support. It even took out a protest condemning the state government's action on Roopa. "It appears that the government is trying protect the corrupt while honest officers were being punished with transfer," BJP leaders had said.

However, the issue came up for discussion at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday where three Congress ministers expressed their dissatisfaction the way IPS officer Roopa brought out the allegations, reports Kannada Prabha. They also criticised her senior DGP Satyanarayana Rao too. "Both the officers should not have gone to the media with their complaints," rued the ministers, according to report in Kannada Prabha.
