Where exactly has the BBMP put the Rs 41 crore sent for Swachh Bharat?

Synopsis

Opposition members in the BBMP council have been trying to traces Rs 41 crore.  The sum was sent by the Centre to implement Swachh Bharat schemes in the city.  However, so far, the BBMP has been silent about where exactly the funds have been put.

According to Padmanabha Reddy,  Opposition Party Leader the in BBMP council, Rs 41 crore was given to the city's municipal corporation as a 'Swachh Bharath' grant by the Centre. The funds were supposed to have been utilised to build public toilets and streamline garbage segregation.

But the organisation seems unable to account for the funds, she claimed.

"I had written letters to the Mayor, Tax Committee chairman and even the BBMP commissioner to give details about the amount. But so far there has been no reply. The amount is supposed to be used in building public toilets, giving importance to garbage segregation or holding awareness camps on cleanliness. But the ruling council, led by the Congress and JDS combine has failed to give any reply," said Reddy.

She added that if there were no response, BJP corporators would lay siege to the BBMP council building.

Even civic activists, championing for better amenities, are up in arms against the BBMP for failing to give any account details.

"The BBMP should give account for every amount spent. If the leader of opposition in BBMP is not able to get such information, then it reflects about the lack of transparency. Until the Bengaluru Metropolitan Planning Committee takes charge of overall coordination between multiple civic agencies in Bengaluru, there will always be a doubt about the transparent functioning of the BBMP and other civic agencies ," said Sridhar Pabbisetty, civic activist and CEO, Namma Bengaluru Foundation.
