Saalumarada Thimmakka, known for her concern for the environment, is reportedly fearing a 'life threat' from strangers. She states she had been getting threating calls on the phone by unknown numbers. Hence she met Police Commissioner Praveen Sood and requested for a license for a gun, for self-protection. An application was submitted on her behalf by her foster son Umesh, reports Kannada Prabha.
Reportedly the Police Commissioner has agreed to sanction the licence. Thimmakka actually asked for gun men for protection, but sources say the Commissioner turned down that request, issuing a gun license instead.
Saalumarada Thimmakka is an environment activist and currently stays at Soap Factory Layout, Peenya. Her foster Umesh said that for some days now, she has been getting threatening calls from strangers. At night, strangers are making rounds of her house, he said.
Thimmakka had raised allegations about 'fake' US-based NGOs. The threats came because of this, Umesh said. She had approached the Chief Minister and the Home Minister earlier, but in vain. This forced them to shift from their village Hulikallu to Bengaluru. Recently there was a theft in her house, where robbers stole her awards. The case is yet to be cracked.
105-year-old Saalumarada Thimmakka is credited with planting over 384 trees - along with her husband - on a four-kilometre stretch between Hulikal and Kudur in Ramnagar, near Bengaluru. She has has been conferred with many awards including Indira Priyadarshini Vriksamitra Award, Godfrey Phillips Bravery Award and also has been featured on BBC's 100 most influential women in 2016.
