Nobody could guess a goods auto transporting rice bags also contained old banned currency notes to the tune of Rs 2.8 crore. Acting on information, Mico Layout police intercepted the auto, confiscated the currency and arrested six accused.
The arrested are K B Mari Reddy (60) a lawyer from Domlur, Banuji (59), an engineer from Chittur, Andhrapradesh, R Harish (50), real estate agent at Yelahanka, Chandrashekhar (60) Tavarekere, Dinesh (40) Bannerghatta and auto driver S Dinesh (30) BTM layout.
The money belonged to one real estate agent Ramesh of Srinivasa Nagar, Katriguppe, who escaped. Police are on the lookout for him. The money was being delivered to a woman.
Dinesh was trying to exchange old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations and had mentioned it to Muni Reddy. Reddy and three others loaded a goods auto with gas cylinder, coconut husk and other household items along with the bags containing currency. Two other arrested followed the auto on two wheelers.
Acting on information the Mico Layout police intercepted the auto near Vijaya Bank Layout BBMP field and confiscated the currency bags and arrested them.
Along with the old currency, the police also found 102 counterfeit notes of new Rs1000 and 500 Rs 2000 amounting to Rs 2 lakh. Two cases are registered at Mico Lay out station and investigations are on said, DCP Boralingaiah. The accused had confessed that they were transporting the currency for 1 per cent commission.
