Locals and various organisations staged a protest, on Sunday, against the steel bridge coming up at the Shivananda Circle. They held placards stating they don’t want steel bridge and formed a human chain, reports Kannada Prabha.
They claimed that there was no use of steel bridge and also trees have to be felled. Widening the railway bridge will alone solve the traffic congestion. Besides, steel bridge is harmful to nature, hence the project must be shelved, they demanded. Kumar Jagirdar, leader of the ‘No To Steel Bridge’ activist group said 30 trees are being cut to construct the steel bridge.
Shops and foot paths will suffer because of the steel bridge. Despite protest, the government is going ahead with the bridge, he said and alleged corruption in the project. The Shivananda Circle railway underpass is narrow. It gets waterlogged during rainy season. Instead of repairing it, the BBMP is further inconveniencing the people with the steel bridge, the protesters said.
