Karnataka cop accused of forcing wife to drink acid given a promotion?

Synopsis

A police constable from Bellary was accused of forcing his wife to drink acid The Kaulbazar Police Station closed the case later, terming it as an 'attempt to commit suicide'  Despite such a grave allegation against him, recently, the constable was given a promotion in the department

A police constable, the father of two kids, was accused of forcing his wife to drink acid - a serious and grave case of domestic abuse, if true. However it seems even the cloud of such a case is not affecting the constable's growth in the department.

Venkatesh, a constable from Bellary, married Asha from Kaulabazar in 2006. He allegedly took several lakh as dowry - yet another suspicion over the policeman, since dowry is illegal in India and the police are supposed to prevent its giving or taking.

In time, the couple had two children. However allegations also emerged that he was abusing his wife, perhaps physically, demanding that she being more dowry from her home. As per a report in Public TV, Venkatesh forced his wife to drink acid on July 11, 2016, in his police quarters.

A case in this regard was filed at the Kaulbazar Police Station in Bellary. However, no case was filed against Venkatesh. The station police filed a charge sheet in his favour. The charge sheet stated that Asha had taken the extreme step as she was not happy about something unrelated to Venkatesh.

The case did no proceed any further. However, recently, the constable was given a promotion in the department.

It is strange to consider that a man repeatedly accused of domestic violence, whose wife accused him of forcing her to drink acid, and against whom a case of this grave nature was once filed is even being considered for promotion. Is there no clean chit required to be in the police? Or is it that once someone joins, they are themselves above all law and crime?
