PM Modi shows respect to Basavanna, releases ‘Vachana’

Synopsis

Today is social reformer Basavanna’s 884th birth anniversary Vachana is a form of prose-poetry written by Basavanna The book Vachana is edited by MM Kalaburgi and translated into 23 languages

Basavanna is Karnataka’s social reformer who lived the life he preached and wrote Vachanas (a form of prose-poetry) depicting equality 880 years ago. In a way, he had waged war against caste system and prejudice through his life and works.

The Vachana book which has vachanas written by Basavanna has been translated into 23 languages. PM Modi has released the book at an event in New Delhi. He paid his respects to Basavanna’s idol with flowers.

Writer, rationalist, MM Kalburgi who was shot last year at the gun point, had edited the Vachana book and 20 people had worked on translating it. The event is being organised by the Basava Samithi which is celebrating its golden jubilee.
