Plan to treat effluent water and fill 66 tanks around Bengaluru

A Rs 270 crore project to treat the effluent water and fill up the 66 tanks around the City. 512 civil works at an estimated Rs 44 crores has to be completed. PLan to convert 88 quarries surrounding the City into parks and playgrounds.   Manure from a compost unit installed at Seege Halli to distribute to farmers at reduced rates.

Urban Development Minister K J George instructed the officials concerned to quicken the pace of the Rs 270 crore project to treat the effluent water and fill up the 66 tanks around the City.  He impressed upon the officials that the delay tactics adopted by them in implementing the project is not right and that a separate meeting regarding this would be called with Minister for Minor Irrigation. He was speaking at the quarterly progress review meeting at the zilla panchayath auditorium on Tuesday, reported Kannada Prabha.

He instructed the officials to investigate into using the treated water from the water treatment plant installed at Tavarekere to fill up the tank next to it.  In the light of failed monsoon the drinking water shortage has to be managed efficiently.  Hence 512 civil works at an estimated Rs 44 crores has to be completed.  As many as 438 civil works are completed using Rs 28 crores. In case there is a shortage of funds for implementing drinking water projects, grants will be arranged, he assured.

He clarified that around 88 quarries surrounding the City are stagnant giving rise to mistaken belief that they are being used for waste disposal.  Hence it has been planned to convert these quarries into parks and playgrounds by scientific development of the sites.  Packers will be stuffed at the base of the quarries, waste will be filled scientifically and converted into green spots, he explained.

Projects have been drawn up to convert power generation out of solid waste and permission has been granted to install 3 to 4 units.  A compost unit has been installed at Seege Halli and after consultation with the Agriculture Minister, the manure produced here will be distributed to farmers at discounted rates.

A booklet published by the Department of Information and Publicity titled “Confident steps towards 5^th year” was launched at the meeting.
