Responding to a call given by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife’s initiative 'Giving Pledge', Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and his wife Rohini Nilekani have assured to donate 50 per cent of their wealth, which is Rs 5,500 crore for public welfare, reports Kannada Prabha.
Nilekani owns 1.7 multi Billion dollars, approximately Rs 11,000 crore. By promising to donate 50 per cent of it, Nilekanis join the other three giants Wipro founder Azim Premji, Biocon Chief Kiram Majumdar Shaw and Shobha Lee Chairman PNC Menon in this initiative. Incidentally, four richest persons who have joined the initiative, all hail from Bengaluru.
Nilekanis have said that “Inequality is in several countries. Hence to keep enough for our needs and to donate the excess to those in need is a necessity. Wealth comes out of great responsibility and we must utilise it for the welfare of the society.” Already 171 wealthiest persons from 21 countries have signed for the ‘Giving Pledge’.
