Karnataka should not have built dams: Tamil Nadu

Synopsis

Tamil Nadu has alleged that Karnataka constructing dams in its Cauvery basin is the cause for dispute. TN argues all Karnataka dams KRS, Harangi, Kabini and Hemavathi dams are illegal constructions. Karnataka constructed the dams without consulting TN and Pondicherry and violated Tamil Nadu’s rights.

Tamil Nadu has alleged that Karnataka constructing dams in its Cauvery basin is the cause for dispute. Tamil Nadu placed its arguments before the special bench of Supreme Court, headed by Justice Dipak Mishra, Justice Amitava Roy and Justice A M Khanwilkar, hearing the applications submitted by the 3 states in Cauvery basin, questioning the judgement issued by the Cauvery Water Distribution Tribunal, reported Kannada Prabha.

Senior advocate Naphade arguing for Tamil Nadu alleged that Karnataka constructed the dams on a unilateral decision, without consulting TN and Pondicherry and hence the water distribution dispute has resulted. All Karnataka dams KRS, Harangi, Kabini and Hemavathi dams are illegal constructions and have violated Tamil Nadu’s rights, he alleged.
