Ahead of his retirement on August 1, DGP Satyanarayan Rao, who was in the thick of a controversy over allegedly providing 'VIP' treatment to jailed-AIADMK leader VK Sasikala, seems to have got a perfect parting gift by the government.
The state government has appointed DGP Rao Rao as DGP and Commandant General of Home Guards and Director of Fire Force - even though the job was for a few hours only.
After former DIG Prisons Roopa made sensational allegations that DGP Rao allegedly received bribes for providing 'VIP' treatment to Sasikala at the Parappana Agrahara prisons, DGP Rao had became national headlines. In his defence, DGP Rao had denied these charges - claiming that he acted in accordance with court rules for extending special privileges to Sasikala. He had also threatened that he would file a Rs 50 crore defamation suit against IPS officer Roopa for making "baseless allegations".
While the government shunted out whistle blower IPS officer Roopa for going public with her report on the irregularities in the prison, DGP Rao was simply sent on leave without any posting. Also, the government appointed a former bureaucrat to look into the allegations as submitted in Roopa's report.
But despite facing such serious charges, the government did not take any action on Rao. However, with only a few hours left for him to hang up his boots - on August 1 - the state government has apparently "rewarded" the officer due for his retirement without any black spot in his career.
It is reported that DGP Rao will take charge of his new office only for the post to be handed over to Neelamani Raju tomorrow. He will be the new chief of fire and emergency services, only for a few hours!
