Girl from Rajajinagar slum to speak on child rights at Parliament

It's a long journey from a slum in Rajajinagar to the Parliament for Kanaka V, a first PU student studying at BGS Junior College in Bengaluru. Kanaka has been selected to deliver a lecture at the Parliamentary session on children’s rights, reports Kannada Prabha. Kanaka was adopted by Sparsha organisation. She is studying science at BGS Junior College. She will talk about the atrocities against children, children’s rights and other issues.

Sparsha MD Gopinath told  mediapersons that Kanaka had lost her mother at childhood and has a differently-abled father. She took charge of running the house and was educating her brother and sister by working as maid in several houses. She was identified by Sparsha during a survey of child labourers and adopted her. Currently, she is studying in PUC and dreams of becoming a scientist. She is good at her studies and also at extracurricular activities like dancing. Gopinath predicted that one day she will be an MP.

Kanaka said there are several Acts to protect children in the State but the cases of atrocities are on the rise by day.  In State, 23.2 per cent child marriages are recorded and what about the Acts banning child marriages? On Nov 20, she will be in discussion with Parliamentary Groups for Children. She said she is proud to be representing the State.
