Bengaluru girl walks the Diana path; wins the 'Diana Legacy Award'

Synopsis

Nikhiya Shamsher is a student of Greenwood High. She runs a certified NGO, which provides education to the underprivileged. She was presented the award by Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales, at an event held at St James Palace in London.

14-year old Nikhiya Shamsher is no ordinary teenager. She has a number of social activities to her credit and acknowledging her countless contribution to society is the 'Diana Legacy Award'. A student of Greenwood High, she was presented the award by Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales, at an event held at St James Palace in London.

The award is given by the charity 'The Diana Award' , which is supported by William and Harry. Their support for the charity symbolises their celebration of their mother as a samaritan and a winner of hearts. Princess Diana believed that youngsters have the power to transform people's lives. Nikhiya was one of the 20 youngsters from across the world who received the award in May.

Nikhiya runs a registered NGO, which works to provide quality education to the underprivileged. When she was just 12, she launched a ‘Bags, Books and Blessings’ campaign through which she raised money to provide school supplies to children who could not afford to buy them. Her 'Yearn to Learn' campaign in 2015 helped set up laboratories in schools which did not have the facility.

She is also the mastermind of an e-commerce site that helps her fund the two initiatives she has started. Winning several appreciations for her social work, she has also been awarded with the Makkala Pratibha Puraskara Prashasthi” in 2016. The award was presented to her by the state's department of women and child development.
