Indira Canteen providing food at subsidised rates will extend to all over the State  Locations to be identified for Indira Canteens by November end and by December end all facilities must be provided Approval has been given for sanctioning Rs 8.98 crore at Rs 29 lakh per month 

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided to extend his most popular project Indira Canteen - providing food at subsidised rates - to all over the State at an estimated budget of Rs 185 crore, reports Kannada Prabha.

A major decision to this effect was taken at the Assembly meeting held on Wednesday. The Indira Canteen will be extended to all districts and taluk centres and all major towns with over one lakh population. It has been decided to identify locations for establishing Indira Canteens by November end and by December end all facilities must be provided so that the canteens would start functioning from Jan 1. 

A total of 246 canteens in 171 locations will be launched on Jan 1, 2019. For construction of Indira Canteens, kitchens and for providing basic amenities, a total of Rs 185 cr has been allocated. Approval has been given for sanctioning Rs 8.98 crore at Rs 29 lakh per month for the purpose of preparing and distributing food, informed Minister Jayachandra.

In Bengaluru, already 150 Indira Canteens are functioning and are a grand success. The canteens have come as a blessing to poor and the labour class communities as the food is affordable here. Soon, all 198 wards in Bengaluru will have India Canteens, the minister said.
