Bengaluru Hospitals’ Music Night Comes With a Rulebook; Internet Isn’t Impressed, Sparks Debate Online

A live music event held on the non-clinical floors of a Bengaluru hospital has sparked a social media debate. While organizers implemented strict rules to separate the event from patient areas, many questioned the appropriateness of hosting a concert in a healthcare facility.

A Bengaluru hospital held a live music event on its non-clinical levels, but the unexpected venue sparked criticism on social media. Many people questioned if a hospital was the appropriate location for a music concert, despite stringent regulations to keep the event out from patient areas. The event was coordinated by Superhealth Bengaluru and Localhost Headquarters. Videos from the concert that featured a live music setup inside the hospital appeared on X.

The video was tweeted by one X user, @iamgaurangdesai, who characterised the incident as an effort to alter public perceptions of hospitals. We forget that the majority of us were born in hospitals and are afraid of them. The user commented, "The first room you ever entered was a hospital room."

The event's promoters referred to it as "HOSPITA/ITY," with a set of house rules dictating how the evening would be run. According to the notice, the music night was held on the hospital’s non-clinical floors and was scheduled after OPD hours.

It seems that the organisers had foreseen issues with the environment. The regulations stipulated that access to inpatient departments would be limited, patient spaces would remain private, and event and clinical levels would remain distinct. Meanwhile, emergency routes would be available at all times. There were also restrictions on what attendees could consume. Alcohol, smoking and vaping were prohibited, with the event offering “Superboosters, kombucha, music and good energy” instead.

Sound was another consideration. The organisers said decibel limits had been set keeping the hospital environment in mind and would be monitored throughout the event. Security and hospitality teams were also stationed at the venue to regulate access and movement.

“Come curious. Respect the space. Look out for each other,” the house rules said.

A number of people questioned whether entertainment events should ever take place at a hospital, especially in its non-clinical departments. The nature of the facility itself, where patients and families may be coping with illness, emergency, or bereavement, was more important to them than the specified house rules. The debate therefore went beyond whether the event was noisy or well managed. For some, it was about whether a place associated with treatment and vulnerability should also double as a social venue.
