Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's personal secretary Milind Narvekar recently received a threat over WhatsApp, warning him that agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate and the National Investigations Agency will be after him if he did not fulfil certain demands being made.
Narvekar, who is considered to be a close aide of the Thackeray family, approached Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale with the WhatsApp message. Following this, a probe has been launched to trace the origin of the message.
According to Mumbai Police sources, the demands were also mentioned in the message.
However, sources said, preliminary enquiry suggested that the WhatsApp message received by Narvekar may be a prank.
To recall, just days ago, the anti-extortion cell of the Mumbai Police crime branch had arrested three people who had allegedly dialled up Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's Additional Chief Secretary Ashish Kumar Singh impersonating the voice of Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar and spoke about transfer posting.
Investigations revealed that the impersonators were using a spoofing app that is available on the Google Playstore.
In Narvekar's case, police sources said, that the WhatsApp message could have been sent using an application that generates virtual numbers.
