Prime Accused Arrested in Twisha Sharma Case

Bhopal Police on Saturday arrested Samarth Singh, the prime accused in the Twisha Sharma death case, from Jabalpur and said he would be produced before a court later in the day, with police seeking a seven-day remand for further interrogation.

Confirming the arrest, ACP Rajnish Kashyap said that a press conference regarding the case would be addressed by the Bhopal Police Commissioner today. "Our team has arrested the accused Samarth Singh from Jabalpur. We will produce him before the Court today. A press conference will be held at 1 pm today by the Police Commissioner. We will seek a seven-day remand of Samarth Singh," Kashyap told reporters.

The arrest comes amid an ongoing investigation into the death of Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, whose family has alleged mental harassment and dowry-related torture by her husband and in-laws.

Accused Surrendered, Claims Counsel

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, legal counsel for Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh, Advocate Gyanendra Sharma, said the accused had surrendered and were pursuing legal remedies available to them after anticipatory bail was denied. "We have surrendered. Now we are exhausting legal remedy. At least we should use our legal right. We didn't receive anticipatory bail, so we will file the regular bail. Why would we take him to the court? What work does he have there?" Sharma said.

Counsel Denies Receiving Police Notices

Responding to claims by Bhopal Police that three notices had allegedly been issued to Twisha Sharma's mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, the counsel denied receiving any such official communication apart from a notice issued by the High Court. "Officially, there is no such thing. I can't be a spokesperson for the Police. After we applied for anticipatory bail, a cancellation was filed against it. Since the cancellation cannot be approved without hearing the other party, the Court had sent us a notice to appear. Obviously, it would be the Police who would come here to hand over that notice," he said.

On being asked whether Giribala Singh was prepared to appear before investigators and record her statement, Sharma said she would cooperate with the investigation if formally summoned by the police. "If they call us, we will definitely go. Ask the Police to show those notices. We are here, right. If they call us, we will go see them," he added.

CBI Probe Recommended

The developments come amid increasing scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma's death. The Madhya Pradesh government has already recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, had married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025. Following her death on May 12, her family alleged that she had been subjected to mental torture and dowry harassment by her husband and his family members. The allegations triggered widespread outrage and demands for a detailed investigation into the case. (ANI)
