A foreign tourist visiting Chamoli in Uttarakhand was left astonished after witnessing the remarkable strength of a local woman in the hills. The traveller, Gemma Colell, captured the moment on video and shared it on Instagram, where it quickly gained traction, crossing over two lakh views.
Gemma described her encounter in a village near Bank, Chamoli, where she saw two women harvesting grass for their buffaloes. Later, when she passed them again, one of the women, affectionately referred to as “Anti,” challenged her to lift a grass bundle.
Though Gemma is accustomed to carrying 20–25 kilograms during treks, she was stunned to discover the bundle weighed more than 40 kilograms. Despite her best efforts, she struggled, while the local woman lifted it with ease, displaying strength, balance, and technique honed by years of living in the rugged Himalayan terrain.
Gemma humorously remarked in her post, “Foreigners vs Pahadi people – no competition at all!” The video resonated widely, with social media users expressing admiration for the hardworking women of the mountains.
One user commented, “My mom also used to do that. I still remember those days. Such scenes remind us how strong and hardworking Pahadi women are. Their everyday efforts deserve the highest respect.”
Another wrote, “It’s a daily routine for them, and we are proud to be Pahadi.”
A third user added, “Women are the real backbone of Himalayan households! While men move to cities in search of jobs, they are the ones who endure the hard work of raising kids and cattle.”
