Tamil Nadu declares 4-day complete lockdown in cities including Chennai from April 26

Synopsis

The complete lockdown will start on April 26 and will be imposed in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruppur    

Chennai:  Tamil Nadu has declared an intense lockdown in five cities from Sunday to break the chain of transmission of novel coronavirus. The five cities are Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruppur.

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said, this afternoon, that Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore will be shut from Sunday 6am on April 26, which will continue till 9pm on Wednesday.  In Tirupur and Salem, restrictions will be intensified for three days, starting 6am on Sunday till 9pm on Tuesday.

A state-wide lockdown is already in place till May 3 in Tamil Nadu following the announcement by Prime Minister Modi.

What can be open:

Hospitals, medical shops, state-run shops providing essential services, restaurants offering home delivery, government run-Amma canteens that provide food at subsidised rates, ATMs, mobile vegetable and fruit shops will be allowed. Community kitchens, non-profits, care givers for elderly and differently abled are also allowed to operate.

 54 new coronavirus cases were reported as of 8am on April 24 in Tamil Nadu, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This brings the total reported cases of coronavirus in Tamil Nadu to 1,683. Among the total people infected as on date, 752 have recovered and 20 have passed away.
