SFI protests in Delhi over rape cases, demands enhanced women's safety

Students' Federation of India (SFI) activists held a protest near the Delhi Secretariat over the recent rape cases in the national capital and demanded strict action and enhanced women's safety. Slogans and messages on the main banners and placards read: "Make Delhi safe for women!", "Death to rape culture", and "Welcome to rape capital — where rape prevention = hide the women".

SFI Drafts 11-Point Demand Charter

Mehina Fatima, Joint Secretary of SFI Delhi, said the group had drafted an 11-point charter of demands at the protest site. "We have drafted an 11-point demand charter right here in the protest. We'll be going inside to place it in front of the Delhi Secretariat, and until we come back, the protest will continue," she said.

'Anti-Women Policy': Protesters Slam Govt, Police

Another woman protester said the charter had been submitted and criticised the government and Delhi Police over their approach to women's safety. "We've submitted a charter with demands. Right now, we believe that the kind of government policies being put in place, and the way the Delhi Police is acting, isn't an anti-rape policy, it's an anti-women policy. First of all, you have to admit that there's a rape culture in the city. You can't just implement things by putting a curfew in public parks," she said.

Referring to the recent rape case near Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), she said, "When that rape case happened around LSR, classes went online because women were scared that something might happen to them. So you can't just implement these kinds of policies to prevent rape. You need to make and implement policies that get rid of the problem at its root. The police just don't even register FIRs."

Protest Over Kalkaji Gang-Rape Case

Earlier on Friday, Students from various Delhi University colleges held a protest march outside Gargi College and Kamala Nehru College, demanding action over the alleged gang-rape near Delhi's Kalkaji Temple. (ANI)
