Clicking a selfie turned out to be fatal for a youth in Kanpur and six of his friends who tried to save him, all of whom drowned in the Ganga on Wednesday, according to the police.
The incident occurred when seven friends were taking a bath in the river after a heavy downpour in the region.
The deceased have been identified as Sachin Gupta (21), Bholu Tiwari (20), Rohit (20), Shivam (19), Maqsood (31), Bhola (16) and Satyam (24).
The six friends jumped one after the other trying to save Shivam who lost his balance due to the high water-level and strong currents.
SSP Shalabh Mathur in an interview said, "A team of divers was deployed to save the youths and their bodies were found two hours after the search began. They were taken to Medical College Hospital and were declared death on arrival."
The matter is under investigation, said SSP Mathur.
