Rahul Gandhi likely to be crowned as Congress President?

Synopsis

After the drubbing the Congress party faced in the recently concluded state polls, the party once again claimed that it would be overhauling its leadership. However, unlike in 2014 - when the party got together as a whole and officially declared the Gandhis blameless for all woes, this time, the party might be serious.

A Times Now report suggests that Rahul Gandhi, the party's vice president, might be elevated to the post of party president - the role his mother, Sonia Gandhi, currently occupies.  The decision is likely to be taken at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, scheduled to be held sometime next month.

In addition, the party is looking at a total revamp at the top level.

Punjab Congress leader Amarinder Singh spoke to Times Now, claiming that Sonia Gandhi wanted Rahul Gandhi to 'take more responsibility' within the party and pitched for a larger role for her son.

A particular section of Congress leaders are of the opinion that Rahul’s promotion might enthuse youngsters towards the party.

Although in the past, the ‘old guard’ within the party were opposed to junior Gandhi’s elevation, senior party leaders like Digvijaya Singh and Shashi Tharoor has been talking about 'surgical changes' within the grand old party.

BJP leader Sambit Patra took a dig at the news, stating that the elevation of the 45-year-old leader is nothing but Shahenshah-iyat - where the Shehzada was invariably promoted.

The BJP spokesperson also added that it would soon be proved that democracy is stronger than dynasty.
