Post attack in Amarnath Yatra, Delhi police issues high alert; Kanwarias to get extra protection

Synopsis

DCP, Delhi has issued an advisory to provide extra protection to Kanwarias who will pass through the city till July 21. Special anti-terror arrangements will be made in key areas. Temporary snipers are also likely to be installed, along with SWAT vehicles.

Within hours after the attack on Amarnath Yatris, the Delhi Police have issued an advisory placing the capital on high alert and proposing security cover for the Kanwar Yatris. Kanwar Yatris participate in the annual pilgrimage and will start on foot from Haridwar and are likely to pass Delhi till July 21. Reports by the Hindustan Times suggest that special anti-terror arrangements will be made at key areas, business establishments and other vulnerable targets, which include crowded markets, religious places, metro stations, railway stations, airports, malls, etc.

The DCP has also instructed the local police to put quick reaction teams on the route. Inside sources said that commandos will be guarding the main entry points in the city, i.e the north and north east part of the city, from where the Kanwars will enter. Temporary snipers are also likely to be installed, along with SWAT vehicles, which will be able to deal with any emergency situation.

This was decided in the wake of LeT attacks on Amarnath pilgrims late on Monday night, claiming 7 lives and injuring 28.
