New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the India-EU Summit to be held via video conferencing today (July 15). The EU side would be represented by president of the European Council Charles Michel and president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Taking to Twitter, the prime minister tweeted, “Will take part in the India-EU Summit at 4:30 PM today. I am confident this Summit will further strengthen our economic as well as cultural linkages with Europe.”

The summit, which was scheduled to be held earlier in Brussels in March, was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic. The virtual summit will focus on delivering concrete benefits for the people of India as well as the European Union as the world recovers from the pandemic

The leaders will discuss ways to boost cooperation in areas of security, climate change, environment, trade and investment, digital economy and connectivity.

“Issues like security, climate change, environment, trade and investment, connectivity and digital economy will also be discussed during the talks,” MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava had said earlier.

The leaders are expected to strengthen plans to promote effective multilateralism and a rules-based multilateral order, with the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) at its core, the officials said.

The talks will also be an opportunity to strengthen the strategic partnership between EU and India, based on shared principles and values of democracy, freedom and rule of law, officials said.
