New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly virtually amid the coronavirus pandemic.
This year, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Prime Minister's speech at the General Assembly session was a pre-recorded broadcast.
In 2020, the theme of the 75th UNGA is COVID-19 related: “The future we want, the United Nations we need, reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism – confronting the COVID-19 through effective multilateral action”.
“India is proud of the fact that it is one of the Founding Members of the United Nations. On this historic occasion, I have come to this global platform to share the sentiments of 1.3 billion people of India,” said PM Modi at United Nations General Assembly.
He further said, “If we were to make an objective assessment of the performance of UN over the last 75 years, we see several stellar achievements. But at the same time, there are also several instances that point to the need for a serious introspection of the work of the United Nations.”

PM Modi lashed out at the United Nations for its response over the coronavirus pandemic.
“Over the last 8 to 9 months, the whole world has been battling the pandemic of the Coronavirus. Where is the United Nations in this joint fight against the pandemic? Where is its effective response?” questioned PM Modi.
“As the largest vaccine producing country in the world, I want to give one more assurance to the global community today. India’s vaccine production and delivery capacity will be used to help all humanity in fighting this crisis,” said PM Modi.

“In this difficult time of Pandemic, India's pharmaceutical industry has sent essential medicines to more than 150 countries.”
“Reform in the responses, in the processes, and in the very character of the UN is the need of the hour. It is a fact that the faith and respect that the UN enjoys among the 1.3 billion people in India is unparalleled,” said PM Modi.
Ideals of India, UN Shared: PM
“When we were strong, we were never a threat to the world, when we were weak, we never became a burden. Ideals on which the UN was founded, and India's very own fundamental philosophy have much in common. Within the halls of the UN, one has often heard the words, the world is one family. We treat the whole world as a family,” PM Modi said.
“India sent its brave soldiers to about 15 countries to keep peace. India has lost the maximum number of its soldiers in keeping peace, Every Indian, aspires for India's expanded role in the UN, seeing India's contributions towards it.”
“India will not hesitate in raising its voice against the enemies of humanity, human race and human values – these include terrorism, smuggling of illegal weapons, drugs and money-laundering,” PM Modi said at UNGA.
