Rivers Swell, Affecting Over One Lakh People

The latest situation comes after Kendrapara had already witnessed repeated spells of flooding during August, with swollen rivers and fresh rainfall repeatedly disrupting relief and rehabilitation efforts. Earlier this month, displaced residents in Aul, Rajkanika and Pattamundai blocks were reported to be living in makeshift shelters on embankments, highways and other elevated areas after floodwaters submerged or damaged their homes. Fresh rain had also entered several temporary shelters, adding to the hardship of families who had already been displaced.

The situation subsequently worsened in several parts of the district as the Brahmani, Kharasrota, Kani and Baitarani rivers continued to swell. Floodwaters had inundated 31 panchayats in Aul and Rajkanika blocks, affecting more than one lakh people, with several villages surrounded by water. Residents had also reported shortages of drinking water and food after local tubewells were submerged.

Impact on Infrastructure and Essential Services

Flooding also disrupted access to education and emergency services. In mid-August, floodwaters entered the Pattamundai Kulsahi Ashram School, affecting hundreds of students and leaving many stranded as water levels rose in the Brahmani river.

The flooding has also affected road connectivity and infrastructure. Earlier this month, heavy rain contributed to damage on roads in the district, while a newly constructed stretch of NH-53 near Kendrapara reportedly caved in, highlighting the strain that prolonged rainfall has placed on local infrastructure.

The present spell has therefore compounded an already difficult situation for residents who have faced repeated displacement, loss of property and disruption of livelihoods. With more rain possible under the prevailing weather system, authorities remain on alert as residents in vulnerable areas continue to await relief, restoration of connectivity and assistance to rebuild homes damaged by the floods.
