Now foreigners and NRIs can book Indian railway tickets using their credit and debit cards.
Foreigners and NRIs will soon be allowed to book train tickets online for domestic travel in India from abroad using their credit or debit cards issued by respective foreign banks as the Indian Railway Catering Tourism and Corporation (IRCTC) is introducing changes to allow international transactions.
So far tourists or travellers to India had to book tickets only through tour operators and someone known tom them.
Luxury train services such 'Palace on Wheel', 'Maharaja' depend a lot on tourist bookings.
The railway officials are trying to facilitate booking in regular trains by foreigners.
Indian railways are making changes to remain competitive in the sector. IRCTC had given about Rs 18,000 crore to railways from ticket sale last year and this year it is expected to touch Rs 25,000 crore mark.
