Northern Railways deploys robots, UVC technology to disinfect coaches

The official stated that UVC technology is completely safe and user-friendly because no humans are involved in the process. The machine moves extremely easily on the laundry line. 

Northern Railways, in a statement on Friday, stated that it is now employing robots and UVC technology to sanitise and disinfect carriages to maintain passenger safety during the coronavirus pandemic. Since July 2021, the UVC technology has been deployed for the first time in the Indian Railways' Delhi division on the Lucknow-Shatabdi Special. Northern Railways General Manager Ashutosh Gangal told the media that prioritising passenger safety during Covid times is critical, adding that Northern Railways has deployed a breakthrough UVC technology on trains after rigorous testing and experiments to disinfect the passenger coaches.

Using this equipment with remote control, an entire train is disinfected automatically. According to the official, this approach is capable of covering even gaps between surfaces that no other existing processes can reach.

The technique employs a robotic gadget with autonomous wings outfitted with UVC lamps to disinfect the compartment area thoroughly. The gadget is controlled via a wireless remote control for the operator's and the environment's safety.

In a statement, the Northern Railways said that this technology not only destroys the nucleus of coronavirus, rendering it unable to replicate, but it is also a green solution for this purpose.
This technique has been authorised and evaluated by the Indian Council of Medical Research, CSIO, and Tanuvas Study Centre, Government of India, and has been utilised for a couple of decades by Air India Express for cabin disinfection and hospitals.
