Railway officials confirmed that the crew of the Bagmati Express experienced a sudden "heavy jerk" after passing Ponneri station. As the express train entered the loopline at Kavarapettai, it collided with a goods train parked on the tracks.
"Six coaches of Train No.12578 (MYS-DBG) Mysore to Darbhanga were derailed after it collided with a goods train at around 20.30 hours. No causalities were reported. A few people were injured. The medical relief van and rescue team have started to move from Chennai Central," said Southern Railway.
The force of the impact caused six coaches of the express train to derail, with a few passengers inside sustaining injuries. A medical relief van and rescue team were immediately dispatched from Chennai Central to provide assistance to the affected passengers.
Local police sources revealed that shortly after the collision, a fire broke out near one of the derailed coaches. However, railway officials have yet to confirm the cause or extent of the fire.
Rescue teams, ambulances, and medical personnel were rushed to the scene to attend to the injured passengers. Several passengers were seen being taken to nearby hospitals for medical care.
The Southern Railway's Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) for Chennai and senior state officials, including Tiruvallur district collector T. Prabhushankar, are en route to the accident site to oversee the ongoing rescue operations and investigate the cause of the crash.
