Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami has been arrested by the Mumbai Police and taken to the Raigad police station in a van.

Triggering drama early Wednesday morning, Mumbai police personnel landed up at Arnab's residence and allegedly tried to physically detain him.

The channel claimed that encounter cop Sachin Vaze pushed and thrashed Arnab Goswami.

Arnab Goswami has been arrested in connection with a case pertaining to abetment to suicide in 2018 that had been closed by Raigad police last year.

The Maharashtra government had on May 28 said that the case will be re-investigated by the state CID.

The reinvestigation was ordered on a request by the daughter of Anvay Naik, who along with his mother Kumud Naik were found dead at their bungalow in Alibaug, in Raigad district near Mumbai, in May 2018.

Anvay was managing director of Concorde Designs, a Mumbai-based architectural and interior designing firm, his mother was on the firm’s board of directors.

The police had found a suicide note in English which purportedly stated said Anvay and his mother decided to take the extreme step since payments due to them were being cleared by owners of three companies -- Republic TV, Feroz Shaikh of IcastX/Skimedia, and Niteish Sarda of Smartworks.

Republic TV had earlier stated that it had cleared all payments due to Concorde Designs.

Adnya, Anvay’s daughter, had also alleged that the police had not investigated the angle of Rs 83 lakh that Goswami had not paid her father, which drove him to commit suicide.

Ironically, the local police had closed the case last year stating that enough evidence was not found against Arnab Goswami.

The arrest of Arnab Goswami triggered intense debate over social media with journalists and political leaders condemning the manner in which the arrest was carried out.

AK -47 wielding commandos arresting and dragging Arnab off to Raigad after physically assaulting him is barbaric. The other media keeping quiet is ominous. Arnab's right to his views is protected under constitution. Courts must intervene forthwith and stop this state barbarism
