"Koi bacchao," the injured man can be heard shouting as he tries to escape. Moments later, he runs for safety while the attacker flees.

The incident happened in Mira Road East, in Maharashtra's Thane district, during the early hours of Sunday. Police say the attack was not random. Investigators believe the accused specifically targeted the guards after asking about their religion.

What happened that night?

According to police, the accused, Zaib Zubair Ansari, first approached the site at around 3 am.

He reportedly asked one of the guards for directions to a nearby mosque. After a brief conversation, he left. However, he remained in the area for some time, which raised suspicion.

Around 4.30 am, he returned.

This time, police say, he grabbed security guard Rajkumar Mishra and started asking personal questions, including his name, religion and whether he could recite the Kalima.

When Mishra said he was Hindu and could not recite it, Ansari allegedly attacked him with a knife.

Second guard also attacked

After stabbing Mishra, the accused allegedly entered the supervisor's cabin.

There, he confronted another guard, Subroto Sen. He again asked questions about religion and reportedly demanded that Sen recite the Kalima.

When Sen could not do so, he too was stabbed.

Sen suffered comparatively minor injuries and managed to take shelter inside a security cabin.

Mishra, however, was seriously hurt. Doctors said he suffered deep wounds and internal injuries.

The terrifying video

A video recorded from a nearby building has now gone viral.

It captures the horrifying moments of the attack. One guard can be seen desperately trying to escape while the attacker chases and repeatedly stabs him.

His cries for help have left many viewers shaken.

The video also shows the victim finally breaking free and running away, forcing the attacker to flee.

The footage has become a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation.

Arrested within 90 minutes

Police moved quickly after the attack was reported. Using CCTV footage from the area, officers tracked Ansari to his rented home in Mira Road's Naya Nagar.

He was arrested within 90 minutes.

Officials also searched his flat and seized several items, including a laptop, mobile phone, handwritten notes and religious books.

These materials are now being examined carefully.

Radicalisation angle under probe

The investigation soon took a serious turn. Police found that Ansari had allegedly been viewing ISIS-related propaganda online. During the search, officers reportedly recovered notes referring to "lone wolf" attacks and the Islamic State.

This raised concerns about possible extremist influence.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said early findings suggest the accused may have been "self-radicalised". He said Ansari appears to have been influenced by books, online material and extremist content.

ATS and NIA join investigation 

Given the nature of the attack, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad has taken over the probe. Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency, have also joined.

Investigators are now trying to answer several important questions. Did Ansari act alone? Was he in contact with anyone? Could others have been influenced in a similar way?

Officials are closely studying his digital activity, online searches and recent communications.

Who is Zaib Zubair Ansari?

Ansari is 31 years old. He spent many years in the United States and returned to India in 2020. Some reports say he had lived there for nearly two decades.

After returning, he first stayed in Kurla before moving to Mira Road in 2022.

He had been teaching Chemistry and Mathematics at a coaching centre until a few months ago. Police said he had stopped teaching around three to four months before the attack.

His landlord had also recently asked him to vacate his flat by May 5.

Victims recovering in hospital

Both injured guards were rushed to hospital immediately after the attack.

Rajkumar Mishra suffered the more serious injuries, including damage to internal organs. Subroto Sen received lighter injuries and is recovering.

One of the guards managed to alert others after escaping, which helped police respond quickly.

Doctors are continuing to monitor Mishra's condition.

Police appeal against rumours

As the case has drawn huge public attention, police have urged people not to spread rumours. Officials warned that sharing false information or unverified claims could lead to legal action.

They have asked the public to rely only on official statements.
