In a bizarre diktat, the Khap panchayat in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar has 'advised' men against wearing half-pants in public places.
Khap Panchayat leader Naresh Tikait said, "Elders decided to not allow men going about market places and daily public life in half pants as it is distasteful. We can't call it an order, it is a piece of advice. Only imposing such restrictions on girls is no solution."
The 'advice' comes barely days after villages in district took a landmark step to promote gender equality which saw over 200 houses installing nameplates with names of women family members.
Some years ago, the khap panchayat had banned girls in 46 villages in the district from wearing jeans, using mobile phones and the Internet.
The regressive move which claimed that jeans were a part of western culture and therefore should not be allowed in India as they spoil the society, had drawn wide criticism.
