Mamata Banerjee holds emergency meeting after Suvendu Adhikari resigns as minister

Synopsis

Suvendu Adhikari has resigned from the post of Minister of Transport, Irrigation and Waterways, and Water Resources Investigation and Development departments on Friday (November 27). After his resignation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called an emergency meeting at her residence in Kalighat. At the emergency meeting, top party leaders including, Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, Subrata Bakshi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Firhad Hakim were present.

After Trinamool Congress leader Suvendu Adhikari resigned as the West Bengal Transport Minister on Friday (November 27), Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called an emergency meeting at her residence in Kalighat.

The emergency meeting within hours of Adhikari's resignation is being viewed as TMC's attempt to put together all its efforts to stop his exit.

Suvendu Adhikari not only wields immense influence in East Medinipur but also known as an able strategist and administrator, according to political experts. His departure may also mean loss of a large chunk of votes for Trinamool.

According to sources, the resignation letter of Adhikari has already been accepted by the CM and she is going to hand over the charge of the two state government departments irrigation and transport other cabinet members.

Senior Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy, who held a meeting twice with Suvendu Adhikari to resolve the issue related to his disagreement with the party, said: "He has not resigned from the post of the party's primary member and MLA. So long he does not resign there is every hope that he will reconsider his decision. Till the day he does not resign from the party, there will be all attempts made from my side to retain him in the party."

At the emergency meeting, top party leaders including, Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, Subrata Bakshi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Firhad Hakim were present. Prashant Kishore was also present at the emergency meeting. However, the top leadership of the Trinamool Congress has not yet their mouth on the issue of the meeting. No one has commented on what will be decided in the aftermath of Shuvendu Adhikari's resignation.
