Synopsis

A diner at a high-end Gurugram restaurant, PAUL, discovered a live worm in his sandwich. A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking widespread public concern over food hygiene and safety standards. The restaurant management apologized, but the customer criticized the response as generic.

A breakfast outing at a high-end restaurant in Gurugram took an alarming turn after a diner reportedly discovered a live worm crawling inside his sandwich. The incident took place at the PAUL restaurant at One Horizon Centre on Golf Course Road, where customer Sulabh Mathur had gone with friends for breakfast. A video showing the worm moving over the meat quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread concern over food hygiene and safety.

Mathur said the group arrived at the restaurant at around 11 am and ordered six to seven dishes. He had already eaten nearly half of the sandwich when he noticed the worm. He recorded the disturbing discovery and shared it on Instagram, where the video attracted more than 1.3 million views, according to reports.

While sharing the video, Mathur wrote: “Shocking incident at Paul's, Horizon Centre today. We went for breakfast around 11 AM and ordered 6-7 dishes. We were horrified to find a LIVE WORM.”

The video drew strong reactions online, with users questioning how a live worm could have ended up in food served at an upscale establishment. Some commenters also shared their own experiences and raised broader concerns about food preparation and hygiene standards.

Mathur later shared a screenshot of a conversation with the restaurant management. According to his post, the PAUL India team apologised for the incident. However, Mathur criticised the response, writing: “Sharing the response from PAUL India team. They are trying to apologise and move on. Feels like a standard draft reply from them.” He added that several people had shared similar experiences at PAUL outlets.

The restaurant management reportedly apologised to Mathur and said the matter was being looked into. A senior food and supplies department official said that no formal complaint had been received at the time, although the department was examining the matter independently.

The incident has renewed questions about food safety standards at restaurants, particularly establishments where customers expect stringent hygiene and quality controls. For now, the viral video has put the Gurugram restaurant under scrutiny, while the circumstances that led to the alleged contamination remain subject to investigation.
