Karnataka: Red alert issued in Kodagu, extremely heavy rains predicted till August 8

The India Meteorological Department sounded a red alert for Kodagu even as heavy rains continued to lash the district.  

Kodagu: Heavy rain continued to lash many parts of Kodagu district on Wednesday (August 5), and many trees and electric poles in the district have fallen over roads.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert in Coastal Karnataka and predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places across the state till August 8.

In South Interior Karnataka, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamogga districts till Saturday.

According to the district commissioner, Madikeri and Napoklu road has been closed due to water overflowing on the road.

In Bhagamandala, the water level in Cauvery is rising by the day, because of which the road connecting to Napoklu has been inundated. Kodagu DC Anies Kanmani Joy has asked the people to contact 1077 or WhatsApp to 8550001077 during rain-related emergencies.

The weather bureau has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in other southern states including Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the next four to five days.

“A low-pressure area now lies over North Bay of Bengal and a monsoon trough is likely to shift southwards and strengthen during the next three to four days and lash Goa, coastal Karnataka and Kerala with widespread rainfall,” IMD added.

Shivamogga, in Karnataka, received intense rainfall on Monday with Hulikal village in Hosanagar Taluk of the state recording the highest rainfall in recent years.
