Karnataka man tied, thrashed for ‘touching’ upper caste person’s bike; 13 arrested

Synopsis

A shameful incident of alleged caste-based harassment and assault was reported from Karnataka after a man was tied and beaten for touching an upper caste man's bike. The incident happened in Vijayapura in north Karnataka

Vijayapura: A Dalit man was tied and thrashed for allegedly touching an upper caste person’s bike in Vijayapura district of north Karnataka.

 

The victim was beaten on July 18, as per reports. Soon after the video appeared on social media, netizens demanded action.

 

Following a complaint and based on video evidence, the district police have arrested 13 persons and also registered an FIR under sections 143,147, 324, 354, 504, 506, 149 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused besides charging them under SC/ST Act.

 

"An atrocity case was reported in Talikote yesterday about assault on the Dalit man from Minaji village. It was alleged that when he accidentally touched the bike of a man who belonged to the upper caste, he and his family members were assaulted by some 13 men," superintendent of police (SP) Anupam Agarwal was quoted as saying.
