Karnataka has 1 out of 25 fake universities declared by UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday has announced a list of 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions in the country. A University in Belgaum district of Karnataka has been declared fake as per the circular.


New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday announced a list of 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions in the country.

The UGC has termed the universities as fake with maximum of them operating from Uttar Pradesh and one fake university from Karnataka.

Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, Gokak in Belgaum district of Karnataka has been declared fake as per the circular.

“Students and public are informed that currently 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, which have been declared as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree,” UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said.

UGC further clarifies that these fake universities are not empowered to confer any degree

It says that Section 23 of the UGC Act prohibits the use of the word 'University' by any institution other than a university established and recognised by UGC

While eight of these universities are from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi has seven, and Odisha and West Bengal two each.

Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Maharashtra have one such fake university each.
