Karnataka CM announces Rs 10 lakh compensation to families of two killed in Mangaluru

Synopsis

Two protesters who staged demonstrations against Citizenship Act succumbed to injuries after police fired at them in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on December 19

Bengaluru: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on December 22 announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the two people, who died during the protests in Mangaluru on December 19.

While the entire country witnessed agitations over the Citizenship Amendment Act, protests in Mangaluru, Karnataka, turned violent with protesters attacking police and police shelling tear gas, lathi-charging them. The protesters pelted stones at the cops and in turn Mangaluru Police reportedly fired at the protestors.

Two persons identified as Jaleel (43) of Kudroli and Nousheen (49) of Bengre died at a private hospital following the bullet injuries they sustained in police firing during a protest.  The police have also mentioned their names in the FIR registered in connection with the violence that erupted during the protests.

This comes amid large-scale opposition and major protest across the country against the act, which seeks to grant  citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
