Jammu-Srinagar highway shut due to landslide

Synopsis

A massive landslide triggered by rains in Ramban has shut down the main highway. The roads will remain closed. Over 500 vehicles are stuck on the stretch.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed due to massive landslide triggered by rains in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday

"A massive landslide has occurred on the highway at Mehar in Ramban district late last night thereby blocking the highway for vehicular traffic," a Traffic Police officer said.

Almost the entire stretch of the highway here has come under huge boulders and debris, he said, adding it will take at least one day to clear the highway.

The men and machines of the BRO have started work to clear the highway of debris, he said.

In the wake of the landslide, there will be no vehicular movement on the highway either from Jammu or Srinagar today, he said, adding this has been done keeping in view the safety and security of the passengers.

According to reports, over 500 vehicles are stranded at various places en route.
